In doing end-of-season reviews. The 2025-2026 Cleveland Cavaliers remember them? Coming into the season, they had the big 4 of(Donovan, Darius, Evan, and Jarrett). Expectations were definitely high for them as contenders in the East, and during the regular season, they flipped Darius Garland for James Harden, which put a win-now mode on urgency. After a solid regular season, we saw the Cavaliers overcome the likes of Toronto and Detroit in back-to-back game seven series. When Cleveland advanced past Detroit, I was shocked because Donovan and James normally don't win in the postseason. Then the Cavaliers were in the Eastern Conference Finals, the signature moment was them blowing a 22-point lead in game 1 and getting swept by the Knicks, who made them look like the Wizards. Now that the Cavaliers' season has ended, I have three questions for them as to where they go from here.
What will Donovan Mitchell decide, and what will the roster look like?
Donovan is their best player, and with an opportunity to sign a four-year contract extension. Will he consider it, because if he does not, he becomes a free agent in 2027? After the way the team gave up in the postseason, decision makers in Cleveland have to be worried a little about the franchise star's future. James Harden, the guy they acquired at the trade deadline, has a player option, and we know he is going to decline. Because of the salary cap issues, will they keep Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley as well to try to win or upgrade for a third star? Regardless, this franchise is going to spend the summer trying to keep its two stars happy with a new bag and maybe some new players.
Will Lebron James return for a third run?
Considering the noise around the franchise right now, there is a huge storyline. LeBron is going to be a free agent this offseason, and another homecoming isn't out of the question. Sure, Cleveland is relying on LeBron at this stage in his career, which is interesting. LeBron could have one final opportunity to try to win a title,, and this team makes a lot of sense. They need another guy, particularly in the postseason when Donovan and James have proven they can't get to the finals. Hypothetically, right now, but if Lebron comes back this offseason, that means massive changes roster-wise.
Future outlook next season?
Cleveland has entered an unknown world after flaming out in the conference finals. They have a head coach who is giving out more excuses than a kid not doing their homework. They have traded Daruis Garland for James Harden despite knowing his postseason track record. They have an expensive roster and looming contract extensions. Cleveland has spent the last few seasons being good, and the question is, how do they become great? It will be interesting to see if a LeBron James reunion is on the table and how it could impact the roster. Regardless, I think this team has the talent to be good enough in the regular season and to find a way to get out of the playoffs early, so another 50-win season feels likely for now.
