There is a new sheriff in town on SmackDown, and that is the new WWE champion, Drew McIntyre. After feuding with Cody Rhodes for what felt like an eternity, the feud ended with a championship change in a three-stages-of-hell match. Drew McIntyre's victory should not come as a shock. Sure, Jacob Fatu Interference helps to no one's surprise, yet SmackDown has been lacking a badass resident to represent the brand. Drew McIntyre is exactly what SmackDown needs going forward, a heel who can take on the soy boy heroes. Here are a few reasons why 2026 is the year Drew McIntyre reigns supreme on SmackDown.
Long Overdue
This win was long overdue for Drew McIntyre after years of questionable booking decisions. Drew was often the second fiddle on WWE programming after he lost the world title for the first time. It just felt WWE saw Drew more as the upper card heel who can main event PLE'S from time to time, but never was booked to win the world title, and his win should validate that he is a major player who you can build around. SmackDown's new world champion reign should be focused on his comeback to the top of the mountain. Every feud should highlight a rival who hates Drew McIntyre and wants to see him fail. Whether it's him and Jacob Fatu building off their feud from a year ago, battling a newcomer who wants to make a name for himself, and reigniting his feud with Cody Rhodes, a personal one that it is. Drew McIntyre's title reign should tell the story of a long-overdue moment and a man ready to kick ass every week.
Not a Transitional Champion: How He Should Be Booked heading into Wrestlemania Season.
Drew McIntyre's win shouldn't be just to lose at Wrestlemania. What is the point of him winning only to have a four-month reign? At the Royal Rumble, Drew will probably defend against Cody Rhodes or Jacob Fatu; either one of those feuds makes the most sense. Drew should kick both of their asses at the Royal Rumble to establish himself as the''big dog'' on the blue brand. Don't book him as a cowardly champ, yet one that can dominate and defend his title without needing help. The Next PLE is Elimination Chamber, and booking Drew makes sense. He should defend his title and win to secure his ticket to Wrestlemania. The blue brand should have a traditional elimination chamber to determine who gets to face him, and booking Roman Reigns to win makes a lot of sense. Drew and Roman have a long-standing history that works with the long-overdue storyline. These two can tell a story of who is the real big dog on the blue brand make this feud personal. Have SmackDown GM raise their stakes with a street fight at Wrestlemania, book Drew to be a psychopath who will go to no limit, have him attack a Reigns family member, a uso will do. Drew and Roman should beat the hell out of each other for 25-30 minutes with a Claymore kick to secure the deal to officially announce the reign of terror for Drew.
DREW is the Biggest Heel of Summer 2026 and Bring Back A familar Stable.
Heading into the summer, Drew should be the biggest heel on either brand; he is ready to take on newcomers. He should feud with a Damian Piest or Randy O,rton two rivals he knows very well and can tell a story of two men who want to take him down. Drew should take on all newcomers and bring back a familiar stable, such as 3MB, yes, Jinder Mahal, and Heath Slater, can bring nostalgia to a once losing stable. Booking 3MB is an easy one, have Jinder and Heath be the lackeys taking ass whoopings and help deliver them. This gives Drew full control of the blue brand and allows his friends to shine. Whoever steps up to face Drew McIntyre by Summerslam should be someone booked strongly to overcome the best heel on the roster.
DREW Should Lose To a Newcomer At SUMMERSLAM
Drew McIntyre's reign of terror should end at SummerSlam, only to a rising star on the blue brand, whether it's a Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams, or even Ilja Dragonuv. Drew's World Championship run is not only about his return to the top of the food chain, but it's creating a new main event star in the process. The WWE has been doing it for years, think 2004/2005, JBL, who reinvented himself, became a top star on SmackDown as the heel, became world champion, only to lose to a future main event star in John Cena.
FINAL TAKE
Drew McIntyre's World Championship win is the beginning of a dominant run ahead; he should lead SmackDown for the months to come. Establishing himself as the top dog in WWE is the main priority for officials, and 2026 will be remembered for Drew McIntyre, a career year full of great matches and storylines,, is exactly what the blue brand needs.
